Background
A member of Major League Soccer (MLS), the Kansas City Wizards is a popular team and a long-time franchise, entering into its 15th year. KC Wizards fans are known for their loyalty, a factor that is noticed and of great interest to sponsors such as M&I Bank. Expressing the desire to get closer to fans and interact with them more directly, the KC Wizards turned to Moblico.
In the spring of 2009, Moblico launched a series of three mobile-based promotions that ran in May, June and July, offering fans chances to win seat upgrades and other incentives by participating.
Objective
Moblico provides integrated mobile offerings that allow companies to acquire, retain, transact and support customer relationships. As a sponsor of the KC Wizards games, M&I Bank had a goal of increasing the volume of subscribers to its email list. Moblico designed three KC Wizards “Text 2 Win” contests, entering fans into drawings for premium seats for the second half of the games. By sending their email addresses to a short code, entrants were automatically added to the pool, as well as were opted-in to M&I’s list.
One of the games that featured the promotion was against the LA Galaxy. Because of the celebrity appeal that accompanies Galaxy player David Beckham, the mobile contest for this game was extended, proving fans with the opportunity to enter during the two weeks leading up to the game. The contest was promoted in advance via Twitter, Facebook, in-stadium signage, team blog, and on the team’s official website.

At the end of the three promotions, M&I’s list grew from 150 to nearly 1200 valid email addresses.
